14 Top Attractions and Activities to Experience in Barbados

Honestly, I can’t get over how much I adore this country. Barbados is an island that’s as mesmerizing as it is gorgeous, and there’s so much to explore beyond just lounging by the pool. The culture, the food—like the famous Oistins Fish Fry—the rich history, and the friendly locals make Barbados an ideal spot to soak up Caribbean life. I want to share some must-do activities in Barbados that you shouldn’t miss.

First off, you simply have to dive into the local marine life. Staying at The Club Hotel, I had the chance to join their special tours to see turtles in their natural habitat. Swimming around the shore almost guarantees some turtle sightings. Just remember, it’s important to respect their environment and keep your distance.

All beaches in Barbados are open to the public, allowing everyone to enjoy the stunning coastline. This policy is fantastic, and I wish more countries would adopt it. It means you can discover your own slice of paradise without any hassle. One morning, I visited a secluded cove beach, just a 30-minute walk from The Club Hotel, and had it almost all to myself, save for a few friendly starfish.

On the north end of the island, the Animal Flower Cave is an excellent starting point for exploring the wild and dramatic east coast. The descent into the caves offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. Just tread carefully—I once spilled my rum punch on the way down!

If you’re up for more intimate adventures, try spending an afternoon on a catamaran like The Calabaza Barbados. With only a handful of people on board, it’s a cozy way to enjoy the sea and spot wildlife. It’s one of my favorite ways to explore Barbados, particularly if you’re passionate about wildlife.

The island’s east coast has a unique landscape that early English settlers thought looked like Scotland. It’s easy to drive around and see it for yourself if you have a car. Exploring different parts of the island reveals so many fantastic things to do.

On Friday nights, Oistins Fish Fry is the perfect local spot. You can enjoy delicious food, watch domino games, and soak up the Caribbean music that fills the air. It’s an ideal way to wrap up a Friday in Barbados, full of fun and local culture.

If you’re not vegetarian, try the local Mahi-Mahi, known locally as dolphin fish. Pair it with fried plantains and Bajan Pepper Sauce—trust me, it’s a treat! For nature lovers, a 40-minute drive north of Bridgetown leads to lush forests ideal for hiking, free from any dangerous wildlife.

While exploring, I randomly met two local army guys on patrol. One was keen for a photo, while the other put on a stern face just for laughs—they were really friendly, though.

Bathsheba Beach on the east coast is a must-visit for anyone interested in the rugged terrain shaped by the Atlantic. Drive along and discover the area, along with some local rum houses lining the roads.

Don’t miss trying the local fish bites, a delicious treat made fresh every morning. I devoured an entire basket in a heartbeat because they’re just that irresistible.

Speightstown is great for spending a morning exploring history, and I recommend stopping by the Museum of Barbados. A sugar-induced adventure led me to explore more than I planned, which turned out to be terrific.

Finally, a visit to St Nicholas Abbey—a historic home and rum distillery—is worthwhile. Just remember, with all the rum tasting, having a designated driver is a smart idea! Like any paradise island, Barbados offers ample opportunities to relax. Grab a cocktail, slather on some sunscreen, and hit the beach.
