A Guide to Exploring Penguin Beach in South Africa

Boulders Beach in South Africa is an absolute gem, mainly because of the adorable penguins that live there. Sure, the efforts by the South African Government to protect these penguins are impressive, but let’s be honest, it’s the cuteness of the penguins that really steals the show!

When we visited Boulders Beach while exploring the beautiful Cape Peninsula, it was impossible not to fall in love with these charming creatures. Plus, it’s conveniently located just a 40-minute drive from the center of Cape Town, making it perfect for a day trip.

To focus more on the penguins, here’s what you need to know:

Location: Boulders Bay is located about 40 minutes south of Cape Town. To get there, drive down the Cape Peninsula and follow the signs for Simon’s Town.

Who Should Visit: If you’ve seen pictures of these cute penguins, you’ll probably want to visit yourself. Not only can you watch the penguins, but you can also enjoy the stunning scenery of the Cape Peninsula. Although everyone refers to it as Boulders Beach, the best spot to see penguins is actually Foxy Beach, just a quick 2-minute walk away. After some relaxation on Boulders Beach, head to Foxy Beach via the designated pathways.

Entry Costs: It costs 60 South African Rand to enter, which is around £3, $4.50, or €4. All entrance fees support the conservation efforts for the penguin colony, including maintaining nesting sites and pathways.

What to Expect: Walking from Boulders Beach to Foxy Beach is easy—simply follow the marked paths, and you won’t get lost! Remember to keep your ticket handy for when you reach Foxy Beach. Once there, head straight for the waves to meet your new penguin friends.

You’ll see that the penguins aren’t shy, but it’s important not to touch or engage with them since they are wild animals. By the end of the walkway, you’ll be met with the sight of some of South Africa’s most delightful penguins. Some might even be calling their friends to join them in the water, and you’ll notice the unique, fishy smell they bring along!

There are also small igloo-style huts installed by the government for the penguins to nest, which you can see on your way to Foxy Beach.

Along the way, you might spot other curious critters, like brown birds I initially thought were penguins. Though I’m not sure what they are, they certainly are adorable.

Ultimately, if you’re here for the penguins, you’ll find plenty to adore. These little ones are overwhelmingly cute, even if I’ve overused the word “adorable.”
