A Closer Look at Pintxos: What Exactly Are They?

They’re simply amazing! In my previous post, I got sidetracked by food, and this is the promised food post. So, let’s talk pintxos! Technically, pintxos are hors d’oeuvres, but you can definitely turn them into a full meal. The idea is to hop from one bar to another, enjoying a pintxo (or two) with your friends and family. You can also sip on a drink while doing so. It might sound like a bar crawl, but it’s more like visiting mini restaurants for a quick dining experience.

We visited this place called A Fuego Negro, known for some of the best gourmet pintxos in town. One unusual item was a fish-themed ice cream—at least, I think it was fish; it definitely had a seafood vibe.

I chose the squid ink ice cream paired with creamy rice, which left me really conflicted while eating it. Yet, I managed to devour it in seconds!

Lloyd was glued to Twitter while Milou was busy doing… well, I’m not exactly sure what. Anyway, we headed off to other bars to try even more pintxos. Even though I’m not usually a fan of bread-based meals, these pintxos were delicious. Each one was so fresh and tasty, it made me eager to try the next!

We didn’t touch those peppers, by the way! Just felt it necessary to point that out.

Try brushing up on your Basque—how many pintxos on the board can you translate into English or your local language?

Patrizia and Aratz seemed thrilled by the pintxos excitement—it’s contagious!

Once we were stuffed with pintxos, it was time for dessert. We started with ice cream and then moved on to cakes, with so many options to choose from.

When I spotted one particular cake, I just knew I had to try it. Just look at it!

We enjoyed the cakes with a nice cup of coffee, but after all that food, we could barely move and needed a few minutes to recover. The Basque Country is truly a foodie’s paradise.
