Experiencing the Thrill of Racing the Legendary Nordschleife in Germany

The next morning in Nürburgring greeted us with what seemed like heavy rain, but that didn’t dampen our spirits. We were gearing up to hit the infamous Nürburgring Formula 1 track, reaching speeds of up to 270 km/h (about 168 mph), a first for both of us. Although I’m not the biggest car enthusiast, I could still appreciate how thrilling this experience would be. There’s a lot of car memorabilia here that’s worth checking out, especially if you have even a slight interest in automobiles.

With our morning free, we decided to watch the Formula Truck races, which is basically like Formula 1 but with trucks. It was such an experience! It was fascinating to watch these massive trucks race at high speeds and handle tight corners without toppling over. The race has the stunning Nurburg Castle as a backdrop, which adds a unique charm to the whole event. While you’re there, you can go backstage to meet racers and teams and maybe get a photo with your favorite, though I didn’t have one at the time. If you’re really into it, this is a fantastic way to see everything, not just the racing. There’s also an amusement park and museum area with rides and simulators that are worth checking out.

Fortunately, the rain cleared up, making a huge difference in our day! After grabbing a bite and watching some races, it was finally time for us to hit the tracks. We picked up the racing suits we were fitted for the previous day and got ready to race.

I have to admit, I was a bit nervous before starting—mainly about the speed and also about possibly feeling queasy from the sharp turns. Thankfully, I was fine, and you can actually find a video of our reactions. Lloyd, on the other hand, came back looking pale, which amused me since I had bet with the team that he would be, despite his earlier confidence. Overall, it was amazing to experience firsthand what Formula 1 drivers endure on one of the toughest tracks globally.

We spent the remainder of the afternoon exploring Nürburg before heading over to a nearby diner for a quick meal to prepare for a night at the Formula Truck festival. This event isn’t just about the racing and vehicles; it also features a vibrant nighttime party with bands, food, and drinks. It’s incredibly fun! You might expect it to get a bit wild, but it’s quite the opposite. The festival is very family-friendly, welcoming people of all ages and genders, all there to have a fantastic time. It was a fabulous way to cap off a day filled with new experiences for both of us.
