Most visitors to Barbados, including myself, tend to stay on the picturesque west coast of this beautiful Caribbean island. It’s easy to see why, with its calm waters, sandy beaches, and the chance to swim with sea turtles.
After spending several days enjoying this area, I decided to venture out and explore the ‘wild’ Atlantic east coast, which had always piqued my curiosity. Following a filling breakfast of grapefruit and bacon (not mixed together), I drove about forty minutes northeast to visit the ‘Animal Flower Cave’. This visit offered an incredible view of the powerful Atlantic Ocean. I found myself mesmerized by the crashing waves and the vastness of the ocean, even if I looked a bit goofy standing there. The cave is family-owned with an entry fee of around £6-10 GBP ($9-15 USD), and you can simply show up and pay at the on-site restaurant.
After exploring Animal Flower Cave, the midday sun became quite intense, so I took a quick break under some shade with a few friendly goats. Then, I jumped back on the road heading south along the eastern side, making stops like St. Nicholas Abbey and Mount Stepney, where I enjoyed a refreshing coconut drink spiked with a little rum. The scenery was breathtaking, with lush green fields and the distant view of Melvin Hill.
Later, I unexpectedly stumbled upon the Morgan Lewis Windmill, one of only two remaining intact windmills in the Caribbean. It’s situated in the Scotland District of Barbados, named because early British settlers found similarities between this part of Barbados and Scotland, though I’m still trying to see the resemblance myself. Maybe it’s the crashing waves and rugged hills.
After leaving the Scotland District, I headed to Bathsheba Beach, known for its quaint fishing village, natural pools, and striking rock formations. Given the intense sun and my tendency to burn, I chose to walk through town instead of sunbathing. During my stroll, I met local fishermen who shared insights into how Bathsheba residents rely on the sea for their livelihood. It was a perfect way to wrap up the day, leaving me with memories that will last a long time.
Oh, and just before I left, I couldn’t resist one more cheeky rum drink!
