Top 9 Premier Ski Destinations in the European Alps

One of the best things about winter is getting to enjoy the snow and hit the slopes for some skiing. Europe is full of amazing ski resorts, especially in the Alps, that are just too good to pass up. Now, in places like London and around the UK, snow isn’t something we get a lot of (let’s be honest, it tends to turn into slush pretty quickly). But luckily, some of the best European ski resorts are just a short flight away, and they are definitely worth the trip.

The Alps, spanning across Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovenia, and Switzerland, are the tallest mountain ranges in Europe and stunning to behold. With such a vast area, you’ll find an abundance of top-notch ski resorts spread across these countries, offering something for everyone. Whether you’re into skiing, après-ski activities, or even festivals, you’ll find it here.

Check out these fantastic ski resorts in the Alps this year for a great getaway. Tignes in the Savoie region of the French Alps is a standout, open for an impressive nine months of the year. It’s not just about its long opening season—Tignes is one of the best places to ski. When you’re there, make sure to explore the high slopes and ski over to Val D’Isere. After a morning of skiing, head to Le Panoramic for some breathtaking views over 3000 meters up. Tignes also offers some amazing chalets; we stayed at a Black Diamond property and it was incredible, featuring even a plane cockpit as part of the décor!

Val D’Isere is right next door and is famous for hosting top ski events, including the ski world cups in December. You can easily combine a visit with Tignes and ski between both areas or take a taxi if needed. We stayed at Hip Hideouts, which was luxurious and came with our own chef. Val D’Isere is known for having some of the most consistent snow in Europe.

In the Tarentaise Valley of the French Alps, Val Thorens stands out as one of the largest European ski resorts and is often considered one of the biggest in the world. Its vast size means you won’t feel cramped on the slopes, which is a huge plus. While it gets busier during holidays, you generally enjoy less crowded skiing than other resorts in the Alps.

Chamonix, at the foot of Mount Blanc, is a perfect place not just for skiing but also for exploring the vibrant town. There are plenty of non-skiing activities like ice climbing, husky sledging, and visiting the charming La Maison des Artistes jazz club.

In the Italian Alps, La Thuile is your go-to spot for heli-skiing if you’re looking to splurge on a thrilling ski adventure. With over 150 kilometers of runs, there’s no shortage of options, and being in Italy, you’re guaranteed delicious food.

Livigno, another gem in the Italian Alps, is perfect for those looking for lively après-ski activities and is also known for being budget-friendly.

St Moritz is often touted as one of the best ski resorts in the Alps. Although prices can be higher, its popularity is undeniable, having hosted the Olympics and being part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. With stunning views and powdery snow, it’s a worthwhile destination.

After a road trip from London, we ended up in Mayrhofen, Austria, which offers a wide array of slopes and plenty more. If you’re into music, visit during Snowbombing, a cool festival with world-class artists and multiple venues. Also, be sure to try the local pancakes at Schihütte Schneekar in the mountains!

Finally, skiing in Zermatt has long been on my list, and it didn’t disappoint. Zermatt is one of Switzerland’s top ski destinations, known for the iconic Matterhorn. We chose to stay in an igloo beneath the Matterhorn, and it was an unforgettable and unique experience.
