12 Exceptional Activities to Experience in Oslo

Located in the southern part of Norway, Oslo is the stunning capital perfect for a weekend getaway. We’ve been there several times because it’s ideal for short breaks, thanks to the many incredible things you can do. Just a heads up, though—a weekend in Oslo requires a bit of planning. You won’t cover everything, but you can definitely hit your top picks.

Here’s a rundown of some must-do activities in Oslo for your next visit:

Start by delving into Oslo’s history at a 13th-century fortress designed to fend off invaders. It also features a Renaissance castle that once housed royalty. Though it’s no longer a royal residence, the views of Oslo Fjord from here are spectacular, especially on a sunny summer day. Plus, entry to Akershus Fortress is free, making it even more enticing. Afterward, consider booking a peaceful boat tour across the stunning Oslofjord on an electric boat.

If you’re interested in Viking history, the Viking Ship Museum in the Bygdøy area is a must-visit. It boasts an impressive collection of Viking ships, including the Oseberg, the Gokstad (my favorite), and the Tune. Your museum ticket also grants you access to the Historical Museum for 48 hours.

Art lovers shouldn’t miss the world’s largest sculpture park created by a single artist, Gustav Vigeland. It’s a perfect spot for a leisurely walk as you admire over 200 sculptures made of bronze, wrought iron, and granite. When you’re ready for a bite, nearby restaurants like Herregardskoa, Hos Thea, and Lofotstua offer delicious treats.

Take a break from walking to visit the Oslo Cathedral. It’s been around for hundreds of years, although it’s been renovated several times. Don’t forget to admire the stunning ceiling paintings by H.L. Mohr. Feeling hungry afterward? Head to Campo de Fiori for fantastic Italian food.

Exploring Oslo’s beautiful neighborhoods will be one of your highlights. Aker Brygge is a chic area built on an old shipyard, offering plenty of delightful restaurants, quirky cafes, and unique shops. While there, you’ll find the Nobel Peace Center worth a stop and enjoy the nearby Tjuvholmen City Beach on a warm summer day.

For art enthusiasts, the National Museum of Oslo, spread across various venues, showcases different exhibitions. Be sure to see places like the National Gallery and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Don’t miss “The Scream” by Edvard Munch, a must for art lovers.

For a serene escape from the city, venture into the beautiful Nordmarka forest. Even without a car, spots like Holmenkollen, Frognerseteren, Sørkedalen, and Sognsvann are accessible and offer various trails, lakes, camping spots, fishing, and skiing in winter.

Grünerløkka, once a working-class district, is now a vibrant area with vintage shops and quirky cafes. Grab a quick meal at Mathallen Food Hall or The Nighthawk Diner. For an upscale dining experience, book a table at Kontrast, and don’t miss the charming Sunday flea market during the summer.

If you’re interested in Thor Heyerdahl’s seafaring adventures, visit the museum dedicated to him. It features the famed “Kon-Tiki” raft and other artifacts. Afterward, indulge in delicious burritos at Freddy Fuego.

Skiing is a core part of Norwegian culture, so visit the Holmenkollen Ski Jump Tower, the oldest of its kind globally. It hosts international ski competitions and includes a museum. The nearby Holmenkollen Chapel is also worth checking out.

One of my favorite attractions is the Oslo Opera House, a stunning example of modern Scandinavian architecture. It’s said to resemble a glacier on the Oslofjord’s waters. Be sure to check out events on their website and admire the marble-covered roof.

If you’re in Oslo on a nice day, take a cruise on the Oslo Fjord, departing from Aker Brygge. If you have time, consider island hopping. Back in town, visit the Royal Palace and feast on the city’s best ribs at Way Down South.

Oslo is a welcoming city with so much to explore!
