The monasteries of Metéora are among the most significant Greek Orthodox sites in Greece. These dramatic mountains and rock pinnacles are located about 15 kilometers (11 miles) north of Trikala and next to the Pineios River. This area has held religious significance for over a thousand years, with human habitation in the region dating back even further to the Neolithic period. Today, Metéora remains one of Europe’s most important religious sites, though many travelers to Greece are unaware of its existence.
